Solo and Ensemble Entry Form

Solo and Ensemble Summary Form

Dear Dist. 1 Members,

I am sure that this letter finds you in the midst of Holiday concerts, shopping, etc.  Although it seems far away right now, it is the best time to get started with contest preparation if you have not already done so.

The dates for the contests this year are as follows:

Solo & Ensemble - 2/20/10 – Meredosia-Chambersburg JHS  – Chardy Bangert, Host

Organizations - 3/27/10 - Quincy Baldwin School - Kathi Dooley, Host

The deadline for submitting S&E entries will be 1/15/10. There will be a $10 late fee assessed for directors not meeting this deadline.  You will be submitting your entry to me via email.  Please view attached form for entries. When you have submitted your entry, print the summary sheet to send with your entry fees.

The fees for S&E remain the same as last year:

Solos - $7
Ensembles - $14
Dist. 1 Membership - $25 (per school district)
Piano Rental Fee - $30 (one fee per school dist.)

Checks and summaries should be made out and mailed to me at my home address:

Deborah Johnson, Dist. 1 Chairperson, IGSMA
3321 Chapel Valley Drive

Quincy, IL 62305

Checks should be postmarked by 1/16/10 to avoid a $10 late fee. Any schools not paying fees prior to the day of contest WILL NOT be allowed to participate.

When filling out your S&E Contest registration forms please remember to be as complete as possible. You may still request a starting time, however if you have accompanists with a large number of events, you will have no choice but to start early. We will need the names of all your accompanists as we build the schedule around them.

Conflicts are inevitable, but can usually be worked out with the individual judges on contest day, given the usual number of cancellations. It has always been our policy that should there be a conflict between a person playing a solo and an ensemble scheduled in which that person is a member, the student should try to reschedule the solo with the judge rather than keeping the other members of the ensemble waiting.

Be sure to review our CONSTITUTION & BY-LAWS for rules governing our contests. The updated version was included on the CD sent to you from the state office.  If you do not have a copy, you may request one from me or access it on the Web at: WWW.IGSMA.ORG, but remember to click on Northern Division upon arriving. The Percussion Requirements are also available there.

We hold our annual Dist. 1 Directors Meeting over the lunch-hour at the S&E Contest. Every director should plan to attend and bring a copy of your 2010-11 school calendar.  Schools that are in the Northern part of our district that may be interested in hosting an Organization contest should check with their schools for availability on one of the last Saturdays in March.

Our Organization Contest is scheduled for 3/27/10 at Baldwin School. The deadline for receiving all entry forms and fees will be the day of S&E Contest (2/20/10). The entry form may be downloaded from the Web-Site, or I will be happy to mail them to you upon request. Fees for Organization Contest are $30 per organization plus a $10 Janitorial Fee. You may give your entry to me on the day of S&E Contest to simplify things if you would like.  Once again, schools that have not paid prior to the contest date will not be allowed to participate.

Again, don't forget to refer to the CONSTITUTION & BY-LAWS for rules governing the event.

Feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas for District I.  I am always open for new ideas.

I will be seeing you soon!  Happy Holidays!

Debbie Johnson, Dist. 1 Chairperson
